While Docs is a great alternative to using Microsoft Office and helps us to work together more effectively, it also lacks some of the small but integral tools necessary for certain kinds of work.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to close those gaps, Google has introduced\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/googledrive.blogspot.com\/2014\/03\/add-ons.html\">Add-ons for Docs and Sheets<\/a>, a set of tools created by outside developers and verified by Google. The Add-ons cover a wide range of features, from creating tables of contents and bibliographies, to track changes and advanced diagramming and flowchart creation.<\/p>\n<p>To begin using Add-ons, click the\u00a0<b>Add-ons<\/b>\u00a0menu while working in any Doc or Spreadsheet.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Google Docs menu\" src=\"http:\/\/technews.simmons.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Screen-shot-2014-03-21-at-6.02.25-PM.png\" width=\"375\" align=\"center\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, click\u00a0<b>Get Add-ons<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Google Docs Add-ons menu\" src=\"http:\/\/technews.simmons.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Screen-shot-2014-03-21-at-6.34.01-PM.png\" width=\"275\" align=\"center\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From there, you can choose from a wide variety of tools. To help you get started, here are two Add-ons we think the Simmons community will find useful.<\/p>\n<p><b>Track Changes<\/b><br \/>\nWhile Google Docs helpfully keeps track of changes to a document, it doesn\u2019t allow you make changes that must be accepted by a collaborator. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/track-changes\/pgjeblaieehjmmahlikmifaggjckpcnp?utm_source=permalink\">Track Changes<\/a>\u00a0Add-on fixes that and adds a feature that many Microsoft Word users desperately wanted to see in Google Drive.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Track Changes Add-on\" src=\"http:\/\/technews.simmons.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Screen-shot-2014-03-21-at-6.21.59-PM.png\" width=\"275\" align=\"center\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Hassle-free Bibliographies<\/b><br \/>\nIf you\u2019re working on a research paper in Google Docs and you need a citation, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/easybib-bibliography-crea\/dnhomniofbmbomomggjpkakilbbgfkhc\">EasyBib<\/a>\u00a0Add-on allows you to search for books, articles, and websites, and then creates a bibliographic entry in MLA, APA, or Chicago style. Once you have added your sources, EasyBib will even create an alphabetized list of citations at the end of the document.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"EasyBib Add-on\" src=\"http:\/\/technews.simmons.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Screen-shot-2014-03-21-at-6.19.25-PM.png\" width=\"275\" align=\"center\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These are just two of the many Add-ons available.
