Simmons Voicemail and Phone upgrade Thursday evening, July 29

On Thursday, July 29, at 6pm, Simmons will transition to a new voicemail system providing easy configuration of Personal Announcements and Away messages through a new web interface.  This system includes voicemail to email and also provides advanced features such as support for blocking callers and delegating voicemail accounts to multiple users.

While this voicemail migration is scheduled for Thursday, July 29, all users should login now to https://voicemail.simmons.edu to record their new Personal Announcement greeting.  Please see these instructions for more information.

Saved voicemail messages from our retiring voicemail system will not be carried over to the new system, nor will any greetings or away messages. Technology will work with individual Departments and Offices on the configuration of greetings for their central numbers.

Concurrent with the voicemail migration, we will transition to a new phone system.  The new system will operate the same as the present system on the same phones but will have some minor visual differences on the phone interface screen.

Telephone System Replacement Is Underway

In response to the aging infrastructure of the campus telephone system, Simmons Technology has initiated a project to fully replace the system and all telephones at the College. After reviewing several viable options during a competitive bidding process, we have chosen a solution provided by Avaya, a worldwide leader in business communications.

The new system will provide a cost effective solution that integrates well with our current infrastructure. Additional features of the new system include enhanced emergency notifications, improved disaster recovery, mobile twinning (which connects cell phones to office phones), and a voice activated campus directory.

A phased deployment of this project will occur during the Spring 2015 semester. When complete, the replacement of the telephone system at Simmons will represent a major technology upgrade and will provide the College with a stable, long-term solution.

Long Distance Telephone Service Changes

As of September 1, 2012, Simmons faculty and staff will no longer need to enter a PIN code to dial long distance from a Simmons telephone.

This summer, Simmons Technology selected a new vendor and plan for our telephone service. In addition to eliminating the need for PIN codes, the new plan provides local, long distance, and international calling at a significantly reduced cost to the college.

To make long distance calls within the US and Canada, press 9, then 1 followed by the area code and 7 digit number (for example: 9-1-(xxx)-xxx-xxxx).

To make calls outside of North America, press 9, then enter the international access code 011, the country code and local number (for example: 9-011-(xx)-xx-xxxx-xxxx). Please note that international calling will be available only to departments that have established a need for this service. If you do not have international calling and you need access, you can submit a request through the Service Desk.
